About SAVE NSW
We are the NSW Branch of The SAVE Foundation of Australia (Inc) and our Head Office is located in Perth, WA (www.savefoundation.org.au).  The organisation was founded in 1987 by Nicholas Duncan who remains the President of The SAVE Foundation of Australia today.  During the past 20 years the main focus of our activities has been the conservation of the African Black rhinoceros in Zimbabwe. SAVE NSW has also supported the Black Rhino project in the Lewa Conservancy (Kenya), Sand Rivers in the Selous Game Reserve (Tanzania) and the Captive Breeding Program at Western Plains Zoo, Dubbo.

Our Head Office remains very active in Zimbabwe whilst the NSW Branch is focusing on complementary projects in other parts of Southern Africa for example, Botswana and Namibia.

About Rhinos in Africa
For 60 million years hundreds of thousands of rhinoceros have wandered the grasslands, deserts, forests and bushveld of Africa.  In 1906 there were 400,000 of these magnificent creatures; in just 100 years 3,600 Black rhino remained  – a massive loss of 95%.  Today their numbers have stabilized somewhat, thanks in part to improved anti-poaching units, tough legislation and tribal education.  These measures have helped in the reduction of the illegal export of horn to Yemen to produce dagger handles and to Asia where they have been ground into traditional medicines for over 2,000 years.  Local communities have become partners in wildlife-based tourism – which has made it worth their while to protect and conserve their assets.  However, poaching is still a reality.  A poacher in Africa can make more by selling a single horn to a trader than he can in five years from his normal income as a farmer.

The SAVE Foundation has contributed to and directed numerous projects in the past 22 years, which  have helped stabilize the population of several endangered species, but our main priority is the fight to save the critically endangered Black rhinoceros from extinction.
